Surgery

Any time there is trauma, whether it be surgical or accidental to the joint capsule there is the likelihood of damage to the articulating cartilage surface. Two common surgical procedures for the performance horse are the removal of Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD)/bone chips and the washout for septic arthritis/joint infections. Epiitalis Forte gel has been seen to be very effective post surgically for both procedures.

Most vets will prescribe a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) e.g. Bute in the acute phase for analgesia (pain relief) and also to supress the natural inflammatory response to the surgery therefore prevent further damage from the enzymes that inflammation produces. While these agents most definitely have their place immediately following surgery, they can be almost too effective, supressing the inflammatory response to the point that normal healing is also slowed. They also can have considerable side effects including ulcers and internal bleeding. Epiitalis® Forte gel is a good alternative to look at when the acute period is over, being completely safe to give alongside prescribed therapy with no contraindications and no identified side effects, even over sustained use. It is safe to use on the older horse and also the horse with other health problems such as ulcers.

Epiitalis® Forte gel is an oral gel with the unique active ingredient Epiitalis®. It is very low dosing and cost effective. Available from selected vets and online. As always, discuss your horse’s needs with your surgeon.
